In the upper half of the water tower seen in the picture there is a steel water tank with a capacity of some 250 m3 (over 56,000 gallons). As with the water plant, the water is used for supplying steam locomotives and is fed through underground pipes to a number of water cranes, including the one on the right of the picture. When required, the top arm of the crane is swivelled over the water tank of a steam loco and the stop valve is opened. The crane will deliver about 2.5 m3 (over 650 gallons) a minute to the water tank of a locomotive.
