05.12.2018: Diesel loco 232 500-9 bids farewell to Wittenberge

Committee and members of the Historischer Lokschuppen Wittenberge were disappointed to learn that the erstwhile owners of diesel loco 232 500-9, the Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn, had made the decision to sell it. On 5.12.2018, the locomotive left its former home of Wittenberge for an unknown destination, towed by an electric locomotive.



The society is naturally saddened by this turn of events, the collection losing an exhibit typical for Wittenberge. When in service with the German State Railways, it was often to be seen in Wittenberge as it was frequently in charge of the interzonal trains between Berlin and Hamburg. Nevertheless, there is a positive side to the story: we understand that the locomotive is to be restored to working order, to re-enter commercial service. And that is naturally good news for railway enthusiasts.
Looking ahead, the society is now taking advantage of the space left behind to renew during the winter the trackwork on No. 1 road, an important workshop road for us.


First, the concrete panels between the rails must be lifted. Then the rails can be lifted and the sleepers supporting them, many of them in a parlous condition, removed. We will therefore replace them with new sleepers, relay the rails and put the concrete panels back between the rails. The society is hoping to complete this work by the spring.
And who knows... we may well find a new exhibit. After all, there is a lively demand in the railway preservation movement for accommodation under cover.

26.09.2018: EMMA is back!

Our steam locomotive "EMMA" is back in Wittenberge. On Tuesday, September 25, at the Berlin Exhibition Centre she was winched onto a Spedition Arne Ehrig KG low-loader to be transported to Wittenberge by road. The steam engine was unloaded from the low-loader on the morning of September 26, 2018, a task completed within two hours and "EMMA" was once again in her rightful place. On the next two weekends, the engine will be got ready for her last turn of duty this year, our autumn steaming days, which take place on October 13 and 14, 2018.

20.09.2018: The star of InnoTrans

Our steam loco "EMMA" is without any doubt one of the stars of InnoTrans, the largest international exhibition for railway technology. After arrival of the machine without incident at the exhibition grounds, on Monday September 17, 2018, members of the Historischer Lokschuppen Wittenberge prepared her for her duties at InnoTrans. The next day, the exhibition opened its doors for the trade visitors. Countless visitors from all over the world took the once in a lifetime opportunity to take a ride in the cab of a steam locomotive. The loco is always surrounded by a throng of people and the members had their hands full the whole time. On September 22 and 23, the exhibition is open to the general public. On these days too, there is the chance to take a trip in the driver's cab of "EMMA", before she heads for home in Wittenberge next week.

15.09.2018: EMMA at the InnoTrans

This year too, our steam locomotive "EMMA" is appearing at InnoTrans, the biggest international trade fair for railway technology, from September 18 to 23, 2018, in Berlin. Since for technical operating reasons it is not possible to transfer the machine to Berlin under her own steam, she was loaded on Thursday 13.09.2019 onto a special low-loader trailer belonging to the Schwarzenberg (Erzgebirge) based haulage contractor Arne Ehrig KG and taken there by road. The next day, the machine arrived at the exhibition grounds by the Berlin radio tower in good shape. On Monday, 17.09.2018, "EMMA" will be made ready for her appearance at InnoTrans by members of the Historischer Lokschuppens Wittenberge. The exhibition opens its doors the following day to trade visitors and visitors from all over the world will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to take a trip in the cab of a historic steam engine. On September 22 and 23, the exhibition is open to all railway enthusiasts large and small. On these days too, "EMMA" will be in steam and after this, she will be returning home to Wittenberge by road on a low-loader.

07.09.2018: A new arrival: 102 172-4

On September 5, 2018, diesel loco 102 172 arrived by low-loader, a new exhibit for the Historischer Lokschuppen Wittenberge museum. The machine is one of the German State Railway's (DR) 1021 class, a class which saw service from Wittenberge depot for over 25 years.
At the end of the 1960s, the DR was in need of modern diesel locomotives for light shunting and main line service. Based on experience gained with the machines of classes V 1510/V 1520 and V 23, the DR however planned on a further development. In collaboration with the loco builder VEB Lokomotivbau "Karl Marx" Babelsberg (LKM), a new 220 HP diesel loco was designed which was originally designated class V 231. While the motor and gearbox of the DR's class V 23 were utilised almost unaltered, the chassis, driver's cab and bodywork were all completely redesigned. In the interests of improved ride quality, the wheelbase for the V 231 was extended to 3,560 mm. Apart from that, the hornplate stays, jackshaft bearing and the wheel sets were strengthened. Series construction of the V 231 started in summer 1970 and the first examples were put into service by the DR in July of that year. By January 1971, LKM Babelsberg had delivered a total of 157 machines.
Their orange livery and angular shape earned the diesel locomotives of class 1021 the nickname of "garden sheds". In some railway depots, they were also known as "postboxes". Wittenberge depot was to receive six of these machines in autumn 1970, straight from the factory.
